Bakota Reliquery Fetish Basket From Gabon:
The Kota have produced large quantity of statues of ancestors. These two-dimensional sculptures are in wood; symbolic metals were applied to the upper part in strips or sheets to add power. Copper in particular was identified with longevity and power. These statues stood guard in cylindrical bark boxes, on baskets or bundles called bwete that contained the skulls and bones of important ancestors. Bound into a packet and lashed to the base of a carved figure, the bones formed a stable base that allowed the image to stand more or less upright.

These Mossi masks from Burkino Faso were use throughout the year. They preside over the sacrifices offered at the beginning of the rainy season, which were to insure the community a good millet crop and harvest of wild fruits. They “supervised,” before the first harvest, the deference given to planted seeds corresponding to a period of famine. Between “appearances,” the masks remained on the family shrine, where they received prayers and sacrifices for those members of the family who were in need, and they aided communication with the ancestors. The mask types evince regional differences.

The Tibetan Chop or Signature Seal is used in order to withdraw money from a bank, pick-up mail from a post office, and legalize a contract or document the chop was required. The Chop secured your credit or your promise. After signing your name, your signature Chop was still required for a document to be legally binding. Name Chops are also the constant companions of Calligraphers and painters. Artists follow the custom of stamping their works with their name chops to “sign” them as proof of authenticity. The basic characteristic of Dogon masks is great boldness in the use of geometric shapes, independent of the various animals they are supposed to represent. The structure of a large number of masks is based on the interplay of vertical and horizontal lines and shapes. The Dogon style has evolved into a kind of cubism: ovoid head, squared shoulders, tapered extremities, pointed breasts, forearms, and thighs on a parallel plane, hairdos stylized by three or four incised lines.

Body Mask – Tanzania:
The MaKonde people of southeastern Tanzania belong to the Bantu people. The MaKonde believe in ancestral and malevolent spirits who make their appearance during certain ceremonies and rituals. These ceremonies involve dancing, spinning and twisting on high stilts while wearing traditional facial and body masks and costuming to hide their true identity. One of the most important rituals is the initiation cycle. The coming out ceremonies at the end of the initiation rites include feasting, dancing and the masquerade of the “Midimu” spirit maskers. The female body mask is part of a special Midimu masker called the Amwalindembo.” The body mask, carved from wood with breats and swollen stomach, adorned with typical MaKonde raised tattoos, represents a young pregnant woman. This body mask along with a matching female face mask is worn by a male dancer. He per forms a mesmerizing dance that dramatizes the agonies of childbirth.

Usually they are carved out of single piece of wood in a double fish hook shape.
Each area and village has its typical style. Some are quite simple. Others are elaborately carved and brightly painted. They may be decorated with shells, feathers, anything that adds to the visual power of the piece. A figure often represents an ancestor from the early history of the group.
A hook that has been used for a very long time will develop a smooth patina along the top rims of the hooks where the storage bags hung. For a collector, a basket hook is a true ethnographic artifact, as well as a piece which is artistically interesting as well.

This colorful beaded cap called orikogbofo was worn as part of daily attire by Yoruba notables. Among the Yoruba, beads are symbols of identity wealth and status. Beads possess a spiritual power and are used as a decorative medium on various insignia of authority including headgears such as this. Beadwork is the province of dignitaries, diviners, and other members of the society who deal with supernatural forces and act as intermediaries between the living world and the world of deities and spirits. They define their status and rank and distinguish their owners and warn the viewer to matters of position, knowledge, and power.
